It’s the little things in life that produce the major changes in our environment. This is true physically, socially, environmentally, and most significantly spiritually. We can accept the small changes in our daily lives, often without qualm but it is the big things that get the most attention. Certainly that is a lame statement but it is true.
We will spend literally days thinking about and then seeking a new car. We will approach with weak knees the need to move our place of residence. But we can change our diet relatively easily, we can plan to get involved in a club or social activity without doubt, once the decision is made.
Think about the little things in our conversation like “as quiet as a mouse” and what is that one about a dripping tap? We used to say “look after the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves”. We are by nature focussed on the little things even in the macro worlds of science and mathematics the calculation is lost if just one number is out. The universe changes by the movement of one star relative to another.
From an environmental and social point of view we are told to “wipe off five” to stay alive, the water boards tell us not to be Water Wallies by stopping all the dripping taps and the Global Warming people tell us to turn off our electrical equipment at the wall to stop the electrical leaching that happens when we “get lazy” and just turn it off to standby using the remote
So it is in the spiritual dimension. God knows us to the point that He prepares us for change, sometimes by creating a feeling of dissatisfaction, sometimes by showing us things that do not fit with our perceptions of how things should be, and sometimes by speaking directly into our lives.
People down through the ages have told of God’s intervention in their lives through all sorts of means. In all these accounts there are a number of constants. First, each of them has been prepared beforehand and is ready for change. Second there has been an atmosphere of confidence about the person, and Third God both gone before and followed through to the end.
William Wilberforce is an example of God doing these three works. He is renowned as the anti slave Trade politician in Britain an Act of Parliament that took 26 years to be enacted. He died 3 days after being told the Bill was “assured to be passed” but between his 1785 conversion experience and his 1833 death he also founded three societies, the Society for the Suppression of Vice, the Church Missionary Society and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. God had prepared him for a 26 year fight and equipped him for the battle.
He calls each of us to stand for something in our lives and promises that He will be with us in the struggle. You may be unaware of the particular call on your life at the moment. That’s alright; He may still be getting you ready.
Amen! It's such a privilege to work and walk alongside God, and stand for something He calls us in. He will never leave us nor forsake us! How wonderful! :) x
