Today I heard a discussion about Science Fiction. It wasn’t originally the subject but that is where it went. The whole direction was where we are headed in terms of the science fiction of today.
Historically there have been a number of standout authors and thinkers who have preconceived where we now live. Pre-eminent among future thinkers would have to be Leonardo Da Vinci who in the 14th Century painted the Mona Lisa and so many other masterpieces. More importantly for this article also developed drawings for a helicopter, a machine which provided protection to cities, and what now is acknowledged as the precursor to the modern tank, in some circles, just to name some of his inventions and theoretical studies all based on natural observation.
Jules Verne is mostly known for his 17th century novel “20,000 Leagues Under The Sea” but e also wrote about a journey from the earth to the moon, and his other well known books, “Around the World in 80 Days” and “Journey to the Centre of The Earth.” Each of these books have hinted at elements that have been developed into reality in today’s technology.
H.G. Wells was another author who could be included as a member of the Future Science Brigade. He has been credited, if that is the word, as being the inspiration for the Atomic Bomb and miniature War Gamers have claimed him as “the Father of Miniature War Gaming".[23]
Wells's first non-fiction bestseller was Anticipations (1901).[14] When originally serialised in a magazine it was subtitled, "An Experiment in Prophecy", and is considered his most explicitly futuristic work. Anticipating what the world would be like in the year 2000, the book is interesting both for its hits (trains and cars resulting in the dispersion of population from cities to suburbs; moral restrictions declining as men and women seek greater sexual freedom; the defeat of German militarism, and the existence of a European Union) and its misses (he did not expect successful aircraft before 1950, and averred that "my imagination refuses to see any sort of submarine doing anything but suffocate its crew and founder at sea"). We may not know the source of these authors, however we can be confident of the outcome of The Apocalypse of St John, otherwise known as the book of Revelation. No matter what may develop into the future in terms of technology, we know that God is firmly in control of the future. The past provides us a bridge through Jesus of Nazareth through His birth, death, and resurrection; while the future He will return to complete the reconciliation between mankind and their Creator God.
As we celebrate the past coming of Jesus in the coming week can we set out to seek the His return with the same vigour as we do His birthday?
